Island beach itself is a 5 kilometer stretch of protected pristine beach with no major development and is located between Penneshaw and American River. From the Sealink terminal at Penneshaw, Island Beach is an easy 15 minute drive ,or a 40 minute drive from Kingscote airport. The beach is ideal and safe for swimming, there are no currents, the bottom is sandy and the sea is very calm. Boating is popular, fishing for the Island's famous King George Whiting is excellent as well as for garfish and sand crabs.
